School in Kashmir to reopen today
Jammu: All government and private schools in Jammu division will remain closed till August 30, 2025, due to continuous heavy rainfall and widespread weather-related disruptions.
According to the Directorate of School Education Jammu (DSEJ), the region has been witnessing severe waterlogging and accumulation of mud in school premises, rendering them unfit for physical classes. Several low-lying areas have reported flooding, which has restricted safe access to schools.
In hilly and mountainous districts, heightened risks of landslides, mudslides and shooting stones have posed serious threats to the safety of students and staff.
The directorate further stated that road infrastructure has also suffered significant damage, with blocked and eroded roads making travel unsafe. Reports from various districts and representations from civil society members, parents and stakeholders have urged the administration to continue the closure of schools in the interest of student safety.
“In light of the above circumstances, and keeping the well-being of students, teachers and staff as the highest priority, all government and private schools across Jammu division shall remain closed up to August 30,” the order reads.
Heads of institutions (HoIs) have been advised to assess the feasibility of conducting online classes, particularly for students of Classes 9 to 12, wherever suitable infrastructure and internet connectivity are available.
The DSEJ has directed all Chief Education Officers (CEOs) and HoIs to ensure strict compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for safe reopening before resuming physical classes. Authorities have also been instructed to carry out thorough cleaning, sanitation and safety inspections of school buildings and premises prior to reopening. Schools have been told to consult local administrations before taking any decision on reopening.
The directorate added that the situation is being continuously monitored and any further directions will be issued based on evolving weather and ground conditions. The order comes into effect immediately and will remain valid till August 30.
Meanwhile, in the Kashmir division, schools are all set to reopen tomorrow after a two-day closure. Officials confirmed that all educational institutions across Kashmir will resume normal functioning from Friday.
