Srinagar: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday chaired a high-level meeting at the Civil Secretariat to review and finalize arrangements for the upcoming holy month of Muharram, while also underlining the government’s responsibility to ensure the smooth conduct of the ongoing Amarnath Yatra.
In a meeting attended by the Deputy Chief Minister, cabinet ministers, senior bureaucrats, security officials, district administrators, legislators, and representatives of religious organizations, the Chief Minister said the government is fully committed to making comprehensive arrangements for Muharram, without allowing the coinciding Amarnath pilgrimage to impact the services for either community.
“The responsibility of the administration does not end on the 10th day of Muharram,” the Chief Minister said, emphasizing that the government must remain alert and responsive throughout the entire period of two months and eight days of mourning and observance.
Recognizing the significance of the occasion and the challenges of managing two major religious events at the same time, the Chief Minister announced the appointment of a Secretary-level Nodal Officer who will work independently of the Divisional Commissioner. This officer will coordinate inter-departmental efforts and oversee the implementation of Muharram-related arrangements across the Union Territory.
Key focus areas discussed during the meeting included uninterrupted water and electricity supply, installation of high-mast lighting at major congregation sites, sanitation drives, medical aid, and timely availability of ration and firewood, especially in rural areas.
The Chief Minister directed all departments to work in coordination and ensure that no shortcomings are reported in service delivery. He also highlighted that municipal bodies and fire services must collaborate to clean procession routes and congregation spots using high-pressure water jets.
Earlier, the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir gave a detailed presentation on the preparedness plan for Muharram in Shia-majority districts. He briefed the gathering on road repairs, street lighting, ration distribution, and health facilities. Several legislators and religious leaders offered suggestions and feedback during the session.
CM Omar reiterated that the government’s commitment was not symbolic or temporary. “We will ensure peaceful and dignified observance of Muharram, just as we are committed to a safe and successful Amarnath Yatra,” he affirmed.
The Chief Minister’s assurance comes at a time when both events are expected to draw significant public participation, placing high demand on administrative readiness and inter-agency coordination.
