Govt sets up specialized institutes, funds research as cervical cancer 3248 cervical cancer recorded

SRINAGAR: The number of cancer cases is going up in Jammu and Kashmir, with Union Territory reporting more than 67,000 cancer cases in the last five years.
A series of questions were raised in the current parliament session in Rajya Sabha.
Responding to the number of cancer cases reported in Jammu and Kashmir, the Minister of State in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav replied that from 2018 to 1014, Jammu and Kashmir recorded 67, 037 cancer cases.
Adding that he said 12726 cancer cases were recorded in 2020; 13060 in 2021; 13395 in 2022; 13744 in 2023 and 14112 in 2024, the minister said.
19 State Cancer Institutes (SCIs) and 20 Tertiary Cancer Care Centres (TCCCs) have been set up in different parts of the country to provide advanced cancer care. Also, cancer treatment facilities have been approved in all 22 new AIIMS with diagnostic, medical and surgical facilities.
Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) conducts research on cancer through its institutes, various projects and cancer consortium. ICMR is funding research for various cancers. The present thrust largely is on cancer diagnostics, cancer therapeutics and cancer biology. The program actively promotes the development of novel, affordable and accessible therapies.
Moreover, 19 State Cancer Institutes (SCIs) and 20 Tertiary Cancer Care Centers (TCCCs) have been set up in different parts of the country to provide advanced cancer care. It was further informed that Jammu and Kashmir has two State Cancer Institutes and Tertiary Cancer Care Centers (TCCCs), 20 day Care centres and 11 District Hospitals providing Palliative Care services.
Similarly, Jammu and Kashmir reported 612 cervical cancer in 2019; 632 in 2020; 648 in 2021; 666 in 2022 and 684 in 2023. Under SPIP around Rs 24 Crore were approved for National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD) under NHM in Jammu and Kashmir for a period of three years.
