Srinagar, July 14: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) spokesperson Zuhaib Yousuf Mir alleged that he was detained by police for taking part in a peaceful protest against the proposed relocation of a liquor outlet to Pantha Chowk, describing the action as an attempt to suppress democratic dissent.
Speaking at a press conference, Mir urged the Jammu and Kashmir administration to review its liquor policy, saying the establishment of liquor outlets has drawn widespread public opposition and raised concerns over public safety, security and local sentiment.
Questioning the government’s policy, Mir said that if construction of residential buildings is restricted within a specified distance of cantonment areas due to security considerations, liquor outlets should also not be permitted to operate in such sensitive locations. He argued that such establishments could lead to public inconvenience, traffic congestion and pose potential security risks.
The PDP spokesperson also accused the administration of adopting a “double standard” in dealing with political protests. He alleged that while BJP workers are allowed to stage demonstrations outside the Chief Minister’s residence without facing action, PDP leaders and workers protesting against the expansion of liquor outlets are detained.
“I was not violating any law, morality or public health norms. We were peacefully raising an issue of public concern. The question is how long these double standards will continue,” Mir said.
He further questioned the government’s policy by pointing out that states such as Gujarat and Bihar enforce prohibition, asking why a similar approach cannot be considered in Jammu and Kashmir. Mir called on the administration to engage with public concerns and reconsider its liquor policy in the interest of the people.
