Jammu:  The Central Government has announced plans to connect the revered Shri Amarnath Ji cave shrine in South Kashmir’s Himalayas with a ropeway from Baltal. This initiative is part of a broader project to develop ropeway connections at 18 religious and tourist destinations across India.

Currently, pilgrims undertaking the annual 45 to 60-day Amarnath Yatra, held between June and August, must navigate either the 38-kilometre Pahalgam route or the challenging 13-kilometre Baltal trek to reach the sacred Ice Lingam of Lord Shiva. With the introduction of the ropeway, the pilgrimage is expected to become more accessible, potentially extending the yatra duration and accommodating more devotees.

Officials revealed that the proposed ropeway, stretching approximately 11.6 kilometres, will be the longest among the 18 planned projects. It will offer a cost-effective and efficient alternative for pilgrims who currently rely on trekking, helicopters, mules, and palkis. The ropeway is expected to significantly reduce travel time while providing a comfortable journey, especially for children, the elderly, and those with mobility challenges. Additionally, it will allow visitors to experience breathtaking views of the surrounding Himalayan landscape.

The government has invited proposals from consultants to prepare Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for all 18 ropeway projects, including the Shri Amarnath Ji shrine. Once completed, the initiative will not only enhance pilgrimage accessibility but also boost religious tourism in the region.

The 2024 Amarnath Yatra, which took place from June 29 to August 19, witnessed a substantial rise in participation, with over 350,000 registered devotees making the sacred journey. The introduction of the ropeway is expected to further increase footfall in the coming years.
