Jammu: As Jammu and Kashmir observes Road Safety Month, the Transport Commissioner of the Union Territory sheds light on the critical traffic-related challenges and the department’s plans for 2025. With traffic violations on the rise, the significant revenue generated from fines paints a concerning picture.
In an exclusive interview with The News Now, the Transport Commissioner revealed the staggering revenue collected from traffic violations in 2024. Kashmir alone accounted for ₹28 crore in fines, averaging ₹2.5 crore per month. Similar figures are expected from Jammu. However, the Commissioner emphasized that the focus is not on revenue generation but on ensuring road safety and compliance with traffic rules.

“Neither the traffic department aims to be a revenue-generating body, nor do citizens want to repeatedly pay fines. Our ultimate goal is compliance with traffic rules and ensuring road safety,” the Commissioner explained.
He further elaborated, stating, “Upon assuming this role, I thoroughly analyzed the situation. If such significant amounts are being collected in fines, it reflects a gap in enforcement and public awareness.”
Steps to Address Traffic Challenges The Transport Commissioner outlined a multi-pronged strategy to address these concerns. This includes ramping up public awareness campaigns, leveraging advanced technology for traffic management, and implementing stricter enforcement measures to reduce violations.
“The aim is to foster a culture of responsible driving in Jammu & Kashmir. We are working towards improving infrastructure, educating citizens on road safety, and ensuring strict adherence to traffic rules,” he added.
Additionally, the Commissioner called on the public to actively contribute to road safety efforts by following traffic rules and prioritizing safety in all driving practices.
As part of the ongoing Road Safety Month, the Transport Department plans to roll out several awareness initiatives and workshops across the Union Territory. These programs will particularly focus on engaging the youth to build a culture of responsible driving, aiming for a safer road environment for all.
The department remains committed to enhancing road safety through a blend of public education, infrastructure improvement, and robust enforcement to mitigate the rising traffic concerns in the region.
