Jammu, August 13: Two earthquakes of moderate intensity struck the Union Territory of Ladakh on Thursday within a gap of nearly four hours, causing concern among residents.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported that the first and stronger earthquake, measuring 5.5 magnitude, occurred at 6:05 am. Its epicentre was located at 36.88 degrees north latitude and 74.402 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 10 kilometres in Leh.
A second tremor of 4.3 magnitude was recorded at 9:54 am, according to the NCS. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres, with its epicentre at 36.76 degrees north latitude and 75.326 degrees east longitude, also in the Leh region.
Both tremors were recorded in and around Leh and occurred within a period of approximately four hours.
The successive earthquakes caused anxiety among residents, particularly as Ladakh lies in a seismically active region.
However, no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property were received following the tremors.
