New Delhi: The Monsoon session of Parliament will be held from July 20 to August 13, with the sitting coming against a sharply changed political backdrop after the recent assembly elections. The 25-day session will have 19 sittings. The session will take place as the ruling NDA has gained fresh momentum after the BJP’s wins in the West Bengal, Assam and Puducherry assembly polls, while signs of strain have emerged within the opposition. The Trinamool Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) are facing rebellion, and the Congress has ended its alliance with the DMK and joined hands with the TVK to form a government in Tamil Nadu.

The last session had ended on a disappointing note for the government after a Constitution amendment bill was defeated in the Lok Sabha. The bill sought to implement reservation for women in legislatures in 2029 and to increase the number of seats in the Lower House. The government is now redrafting the bill and may propose a uniform 50 per cent increase in Lok Sabha seats for all states. A population-linked rise in seats has been a major concern for parties in the South.

The fallout of the rebellion in the TMC and Shiv Sena (UBT) is also expected to figure in the coming session. A decision from Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is awaited on demands from 20 TMC MPs and six Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs seeking recognition as separate groups. In the Rajya Sabha, the numbers have tilted further in favour of the ruling NDA after newly elected and re-elected members took oath. Three rebel TMC MPs from the Upper House have quit, and bypolls are expected to help the BJP add to its strength in the Rajya Sabha.

The long-standing alliance between the DMK and the Congress ended after the high-stakes Tamil Nadu assembly elections held in May. In a post on X, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that, on the recommendation of the government, President Droupadi Murmu has summoned both Houses of Parliament for the Monsoon Session 2026. “The Session will commence on 20 July, 2026 and continue till 13 August, 2026 for meaningful debate, discussion and decisions on issues of national importance,” he said.

Overall, the session is set to run from July 20 to August 13 with 19 sittings, against the backdrop of changes in the ruling and opposition camps, a pending decision on rebel MPs, and a fresh attempt by the government to bring back the defeated Constitution amendment bill in a revised form.
