New Delhi,April 25: The continuing Gulf crisis, driven by rising tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran, has started to take a serious toll on India’s agricultural sector, with watermelon farmers emerging among the hardest hit due to a sudden decline in overseas shipments.
India’s watermelon trade relies heavily on markets in West Asia, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain. However, recent disruptions in shipping routes and supply chains have slowed exports significantly. As a result, large quantities of produce are now being redirected to domestic markets, leading to oversupply and a sharp drop in prices across major growing regions.
According to market sources, wholesale watermelon rates have fallen steeply in several areas, in some cases reaching distress levels as farmers struggle to find buyers amid weak export demand. The sudden price decline has added financial pressure on growers who had prepared crops specifically for international markets.
The impact of the crisis is not limited to watermelons alone. Other agricultural commodities, including bananas, vegetables and various perishable goods destined for West Asian countries, have also faced setbacks. Many consignments have reportedly been delayed or left stranded, forcing farmers and traders to sell their produce locally at reduced prices.
Trade analysts note that the conflict has disrupted key maritime routes, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important shipping passages. Rising freight charges, higher insurance costs and uncertainty in transportation schedules have further complicated export operations for agricultural products.
Agriculture industry representatives have warned that unless alternative export destinations are identified or timely government support measures are introduced, farmers cultivating export-oriented crops could suffer substantial financial losses. The risk is especially high for perishable items such as watermelon, which have a limited shelf life and cannot be stored for extended periods.
