Over 100 CCTV Cameras, Control Rooms to Ensure Safe Travel on Katra Expressway

JAMMU: The Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway is emerging as a major infrastructure project that promises to transform travel to the revered pilgrimage sites of Mata Vaishno Devi and Amarnath.
Following the success of the Katra-Srinagar rail link, this expressway brings renewed hope for faster and more convenient connectivity.
Expected to be operational by March 2026, the expressway will drastically reduce travel time from Delhi to Katra, cutting it down to just six to six and a half hours.
The expressway is being developed under the Bharatmala project and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April 2022. Initially slated for completion by 2025, the project faced delays due to land acquisition issues, especially in the stretches between Kathua to Jammu and from the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway to Katra in Reasi district.
Despite these challenges, construction is progressing rapidly, with flyovers being constructed on most of the route to minimize land acquisition needs.
One of the most impressive features of this 150-kilometre stretch between Katra and Pathankot is the planned installation of over 100 CCTV cameras and fully-equipped control rooms. These will enable real-time monitoring and ensure preparedness for any emergency situation, enhancing both safety and efficiency.
Once completed, the expressway will allow vehicles to travel at speeds ranging between 80 to 120 km/h, drastically cutting down travel time while also reducing fuel expenses.
It is expected to boost religious tourism significantly, making pilgrimages to Mata Vaishno Devi and Amarnath more accessible. Moreover, the expressway will be a catalyst for economic development, especially in Jammu and Kashmir, by encouraging inflows of tourists and improving logistics for local businesses.
The expressway’s completion will not only strengthen physical connectivity but will also bridge emotional and cultural distances, connecting people more closely with spiritual centres.
As the work continues at a fast pace, expectations are high that the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway will become a game-changer for northern India’s travel and tourism landscape.
