Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday busted a fake currency circulation racket in south Kashmir’s Shopian and arrested three persons, including a Block Development Officer (BDO), officials said.
Police said the action was taken after a local shopkeeper lodged a complaint alleging that a person had used fake currency notes while purchasing goods from his shop. Acting on the complaint, police launched an investigation and recovered fake currency notes worth ₹79,000.
An FIR (No. 33/2026) under relevant sections of law has been registered at Police Station Shopian, and investigation was taken up.
The arrested accused have been identified as Mohd Syed Wani, son of Gh Mohiuddin Wani of Batpora Shopian; Mohd Maqbool Naikoo, son of Habibullah Naikoo of Bungam Shopian; and Peerzada Altaf, Block Development Officer (BDO) Zainapora, son of Peerzada Gh Mohd of TukrooBabnad.
Police said all the accused have been formally arrested and further investigation is underway to trace the source of the fake currency and identify other persons involved in the racket.
Police also urged the public to remain vigilant while dealing with currency transactions and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
