Narcotic trade rises; 2412 cases registered, 3317 arrested in 3 yrs

JAMMU: The narcotic trade has shown a steep rise in Jammu and Kashmir with as many as 2412 cases registered and 3317 persons arrested in the state in last three years.

As per official data available with The News Now, the police and other enforcement agencies seized a whopping 1866.787 kg of narcotics of different types excluding 51,539 bottles of Codeine Based Cough Syrups, in 2412 cases of smuggling reported between 2016 and December 2018.

The narcotics seized include Amphetamine, Cannabis, Cocaine, Ganja, Hashish, Heroin, Ketamine, Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LAD), Codeine Based Cough Syrups (CBCS) and other banned products.

In further break up, the data reveals that during 2018, around 845 cases were registered and 1201 person arrested after the seizure of 622.357 Kg narcotics and 33,740 CBCS bottles. The narcotic material seized by authorities included Ganja 117.8 Kg, Hashish 307.51 Kg, Heroin 197.02 Kg and Opium 0.27 Kg.

The year 2017 witnessed recovery of 748.76 Kg narcotics and 17799 CBCS bottles leading to registration of 961 cases and arrests of 1331 persons.

The narcotic material seized by authorities included Ganja 209.96 Kg, Hashish 331.34 Kg and Heroin 201.46 Kg.

Similarly, during 2016, against the seizure of 495.67 Kg narcotics and 15513 CBCS bottles, 606 cases were registered and 865 persons arrested at different police stations. The narcotic material seized by authorities included Ganja 133.65 Kg, Hashish 178.47 Kg, Heroin 174.94 Kg and Opium 8.61 Kg.

The data further reveals that authorities have seized the 232059.01 kg narcotic material of different types in 1409 cases of smuggling reported between 2011 and 2014.
