'Mullah Ji' A Companion Of Naga Sadhu During Kumbh

January 16: For more than three decades Mohammed Mehmood a resident of Muzaffarnagar Uttar Pradesh has been coming to the Kumbh Mela. The 76-year-old has a unique connection with the largest confluence of humanity in the world.

A electrician by profession, Mehmood has been lighting up the tents of the famed Juna Akhara at the Kumbh since 1986.

According to Mehmood, it was a chance meeting with a Naga Sadhu 33 years ago brought him to Kumbh for the first time.

The sadhus tasked Mehmood to light up the tents of the Juna Akhara, one of the largest and oldest of its kind, something that he has been continuing ever since.

Fontly called Light Waale’ (Mullah ji, the lighting man) Mehmood who runs a electrical shop in Muzaffarnagar said the Sadhus who come for Kumbh treat him like one of them.

"They respect me like a family member. Though I earn money here, but spiritual contentment is more important now. I also learn good things from the company of sadhus," Mehmood told The Times of India, adding "I feel proud and happy to be a part of the Kumbh."

Mehmood also said he has been given space to offer 'namaz' by the saints at the Kumbh site. "There is no discrimination here. They treat me well. They give me the same food which they eat. I feel spiritually elated here," said Mehmood.

Since 1986, Mehmood says he has attended almost all Kumbha except the mela that happens in Nashik. He however admitted that he has not kept the count of how many Kumbh Melas he has been to.
