Always stood for democracy against all odds: J&K Congress

Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir unit of Congress said the party always stood for democracy against all odds.

Chairing a meeting of senior leadership of the Congress, JKPCC Chief GA Mir took stock of the overall political scenario in the state, besides reviewing the organisational activities, in the wake of the recent ULB elections and the ongoing Panchayats polls in the state.

Mr Mir discussed the strategy to gear up to expose BJP for future elections in the state.

The party leaders felt the need to counter the fake propaganda and strategy of BJP to further polarise the situation in the wake of coming general elections to the Lok Sabha and Assembly in future.

The party would devise an effective strategy to deal with the false propaganda and publicity of BJP, as there are no achievements of party in the province and people have faced the worst-ever neglect and mis-governance in the state during the PDP-BJP rule and the skeletons of their misdeeds are tumbling out one after another on all fronts, be it recruitment, development, corruption or favouritism.

''Congress took the bold decisions to strengthen democracy in the state against all odds of worst-ever security situation and political scenario in the state, especially when two main parties had opted out of the exercise,'' said Mr Mir.

He said this had put the party workers in a very difficult situation in most parts and had to face a hostile atmosphere, as Congress was the only main political force to face the people.

While the party gained heavily in Ladakh and Kashmir regions, its overall vote share in Jammu region has multiplied many fold, as compared to the last elections.

He further said BJP can claim victory in terms of number in JMC, but no one can ignore the fact that BJP lost over 50 per cent of vote share in Jammu city alone as compared to last assembly elections.

He said the Congress vote share and percentage in almost all ULBs in the region has gone up considerably, which reflects disillusionment with BJP and is a positive indication for the future of Congress.

He said the division of votes of dissent between Congress and independents went to the advantage of BJP in terms of number, but BJP had lost most of ULBs in the region, although it indulged in horse trading exercise to woo the independents and Congress Councillors, through influence of power, by delaying the elections to the presidents/vice-presidents of the MCs, without any justified reason.

He blamed BJP of depriving the women of 33 per cent quota to the heads of ULBs, including to those of SC/ST and OBCs as already provided in the State Municipal Act, at par with the 74th amendment, done during the Congress regime in the state.
