Book Review : The Body Nirvana by Garima

Many self-help books about weight loss are being published, as obesity is a growing problem worldwide, but many of them treat the weight gain issue individually and not in toto with other weight gain and psychological issues. The author Garima comes up with the book “The Body Nirvana”, which details a simple action plan about achieving weight loss and good health, and also incorporates how to deal with other issues which lead to weight gain or occur as a result of weight gain.
Subtitled “More than just a weight loss book”, this line is apt and forms the crux of the book because excess weight is not just a body issue but a multi-dimensional problem and needs to be tackled as such, and as the author says and discusses in the book- “Losing weight is only a part of the story”. The front cover of the book is very well-conceptualized, with soothing shades of pastel blue and green, and a body scintillating and having an aura of calmness, after having achieved Nirvana or enlightenment about holistic well-being.
The book has 10 chapters, and they all take a holistic approach on various mind-body issues. The first chapter “A Novel Health Concept” details that the mind affects the body, and the links between stress and disease are well documented. That is how by taking a holistic health approach; people have healed from hypertension, arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, joint pains and even cancers. The author details here that why dieting did not work for some people, but this book will, for to lose weight, one needs more than a prescription of the latest diet plan. The second chapter “The Mind Game of Weight Loss” details that trying to lose weight is a mind game and highlights common mental blocks to weight loss.
The sixth chapter “An Oasis in My Home” details about small changes that we can make in our home or office space so that we are less stressed, more focused on our goals and also more active, and how this can trigger weight loss and increase physical and emotional well-being. The eighth chapter “Why Eat When You Can Feast” discusses how by not going on an exhaustive diet, one can then also achieve their weight loss goal. There are other chapters on Sleep Medicine, Psychology, Mindfulness and Spirituality.
The book has many illustrations which are upbeat and increase the appealing quotient of the book. The book incorporates famous quotes by many personalities, which are relevant to the subject matter. Various tips and to-do points have been detailed, along with many useful fundas, notes and tricks. An extensive bibliography has also been given at the end of each chapter. To keep the reader engrossed, many tasks and quizzes are also included in the book. Many novel concepts like Emotional Freedom Technique, forgiveness practices, mindfulness and design psychology have also been described.
This is a book that is very entertaining to read, owing to the author’s unique writing style and even though some of the recommendations that she gives seem out-of-the-box and quirky at first, but they are very effective and plausible, being based on scientific reasoning. This is a thoughtfully presented resource for those dealing with stress and excess weight, and a straightforward and memorable manual about achieving holistic health through easy steps. This is a self-help book which is brimming with information, is an interesting caper into achieving positivity of mind and empowering health, and helps the readers in finding the missing pieces of the weight loss puzzle. It is recommended to those who are looking for an enriching work of positive perspective, mindfulness and weight loss motivation.
