LeT terrorist killed

SRINAGAR: A Pakistani terrorist belonging to terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) was killed by the security forces in an encounter today in the Handwara area of Kupwara district, even as terrorists fired upon a police team in neighbouring Baramulla district, however, no causality was reported in the incident.

A foreign terrorist, belonging to the LeT, was killed in the encounter at Batpora in Handwara in north Kashmir, police said on Thursday.

Giving details of the encounter, a spokesperson said, “Pursuing credible leads regarding the presence of terrorist in Batapora village of Magam area in District Handwara, a joint patrol of the security forces today in the afternoon hours launched searches in the area.”

“During the searches, a hiding terrorist fired on the search party. The fire was retaliated and in the ensuing encounter the terrorist was successfully eliminated by the joint patrol. No collateral damage was witnessed during the encounter,” he said.

The body of the Pakistani militant was recovered from the encounter site along with a weapon and other incriminating material.

“On the basis of the incriminating materials recovered, the killed terrorist is learnt to be a foreigner (Pakistani national) and was affiliated to the proscribed terror outfit LeT. More details about the identity of the slain terrorist are being ascertained,” the official said.

The firing has stopped, but the search operation was still going, the official said.

Police has registered a case and investigation has been initiated in the instant matter.

Meanwhile, terrorists fired upon a police team in Baramulla district today, police said.

No causality was reported in the incident, they said.

The ultras fired at the police deployment from a distance on Sopore bypass in the north Kashmir district, the police said.

The area has been cordoned off and a hunt launched to nab the attackers, they said.
