Book Review: 'Life is What Matters' by Alka Dixit

Motivational and Self-help books are mostly in the form of non-fiction, where there are some tips and to-do points for self-improvement and unravelling solutions to various problems. Some of them are also in the fiction format, where inspirational stories are used to send through some important messages to the reader. But what about a book that uses a story to send through a message of how to live a happier life, but in the process also describes some easy steps and to-do points to do so. The author Alka Dixit comes up with such a book “Life is what matters”, which details a plan to live a happier life, but wrapped in a simple story format.
This book is an incredibly motivating tale of a girl who embraced her imperfections and succeeded in life, against all odds. The author met the enigmatic Dr. Aditi and was intrigued by her profound understanding of life and thus, has penned this book on her effective and easy to adapt plan for a happier life. The storyline follows how the author got inspired by Dr. Aditi and her way of handling her life that she decided to share this story with others in the form of a book.
The book is divided into three sections. The first part titled “Your Life is your Kid” details how one should raise one’s life like one raises kids. According to Dr. Aditi, if you presume that your life is your baby, you will be able to find about how to love your life again, how to streamline life’s activities and how to fulfil its dreams. It also describes how Happiness and Self-acceptance go hand in hand; how one should indulge in Personal development, maintaining relationships and Professional excellence; and about inculcating mindfulness.
The second part is titled “Other Factors beyond Control” and describes how you should authorize your life, and speak up for yourself. The third part is titled “Odds of Life” and details how one must overcome fears, shortcomings and hurdles and achieve big with available opportunities and resources.
This is an engaging and well-written book that demystifies how to live a happy life with a simple story format, straightforward steps and to-do exercises; and is an invaluable source about learning to walk through crises of life with positivity and realizing the true happiness that life holds. It is a refreshingly pleasant addition to the genre of Self-Help books which foray into detailing how to live a better and happy life, and will delight readers by its illuminating exploration into handling life’s stresses by simple ways and easy guidelines.
