SRINAGAR: A special police officer (SPO) on Wednesday decamped with the service rifle of another cop-a police constable in Baramulla district, police said.
Waseem Ahmad, posted on guard duty at the house of a former BJP's Kisan Morcha member Muhammad Maqbool in Rafiabad area, decamped with the service weapon of constable Shamshad Ahmad, a police officer said.
“The SPO- a resident of Shatloo Panzala- stole the weapon from the personal trunk of the constable posted as the personal security officer (PSO) of a protected person in Sopore,” the spokesman said.
Ahmed, who was also posted at the residence of the protected person in north Kashmir's Baramulla district, was stationed there without a weapon, he said.
Police said a manhunt has been launched to trace Ahmad and the weapon.
Security forces have also established checkpoints at various places in the district to recover the rifle.
A case has been registered and the police is investigating the matter for further details, he added.
Special police officers are engaged on a fixed monthly remuneration in the state to fight militancy.
They are not fully trained to handle weapons issued to them while performing duties.
