Summer-like weather during day, night remains chilly in Kashmir

Srinagar, Jan 15 : People continued to enjoy summer-like weather due to sunshine though the night temperature remained several degrees below freezing point owing to dry conditions in Kashmir valley.

However, chilly weather conditions continued in the border town of Kargil, which was the coldest place in the region at minus 20 degree C, followed by Leh, where the mercury settled at minus 10.9 degree C.

A Met department spokesperson told UNI that the weather will remain dry during the next 48 hours in the state, which could result in further dip in the night temperature. He said the huge difference between maximum and minimum temperature is due to clear skies and there is nothing unusual in it.

Even though the night temperature at Leh witnessed an improvement of about 5 degree C, it was still the second coldest place in the region at minus 10.9 degree C.

He said the skies will be mainly clear during the next 24 hours in Leh, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 3 degree C and minus 17 degree C, respectively.

The mercury at world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, where ski slopes are under several feet of snow, dipped over a degree from Sunday and settled at minus 6.4 degree C. However, the day temperature witnessed an improvement due to sunshine.

People woke up to a sunny Monday morning in the summer capital, Srinagar, where the night temperature witnessed an improvement of a degree from Sunday and settled at minus 3.3 degree C. The day temperature

in Srinagar was recorded on Sunday at 6 degree above normal.

“Skies will be mainly clear with haze during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 10 degree C and minus 4 degree C, respectively,” he added.

The night temperature at world famous health resort of Pahalgam, Kupwara in north Kashmir and Kukernag dipped and settled at minus 5.6 degree C and minus 4.8 degree C, respectively.

Qazigund, gateway to Kashmir valley, witnessed a marginal improvement in the night temperature. Against minus 4.4 degree C recorded on Sunday, the night temperature at Qazigund was minus 4.2 degree C.
