NPSU observes Jammu Student Martyrs Anniversary in front of Science College, Jammu

NPSU held 51st Anniversary of four Student Martyrs who were shot dead by police bullets in Jammu on 17th & 18th of October, 1966. Three students were martyred namely, Brijmohan Sharma, Subhash Chandra, Gulshan Handa on 17th October, 1966 in the ground of GGM Science College, Jammu whereas S. Gurcharan Singh was killed on 18th October, 1966 in Kanak Mandi Bazar when a student procession was going on in the streets of Jammu.

This movement was led by Bhim Singh, the then Chief Organizer of J&K Students Congress and other organizations demanding Jammu University, Engineering, Medical & Law Colleges in Jammu. This movement started an awakening campaign in the entire Jammu Pradesh which has remained denied of a university, professional colleges.

On the intervention of Mrs. Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister Inquiry Commission was held and all guilty policemen and politicians were identified. A Memorial Site was raised in front of GGM Science College, Jammu where stands a memorial in honour of the martyr students. Several senior members of the civil society, political and social activists joined at the memorial site to pay homage to the student martyrs. Prof.Bhim Singh paid homage to the student martyrs and expressed gratitude to the people of Jammu who have stood like a rock with the students movement fighting for equity and justice for 50 years. Others who joined the ceremony included M/s. Harsh Dev Singh, Chairman-JKNPP, Balwant Singh Mankotia, President-JKNPP, Gulchain Singh Charak, President-Dogra Sadar Sabha and others.

NPSU President, Thakur Virender Singh, the Convenor of the programme expressed gratitude to the leadership of Jammu from all walks of life and all student organizations from J&K for their participation in the Martyrs Anniversary. Others who paid homage included Ms. Anita Thakur (General Secretary) and Ex-MLA Yashpaul Kundal (President, Young Panthers).

Hundreds of students shared one slogan--Organization of J&K, creation of Jammu State & Kashmir State. The students associated with JJSF are also sitting on dharna in memory of Jammu Students Martyrs.

Prof.Bhim Singh in his message has expressed deep sympathy with the families of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the dignity and civil rights of the people of Jammu 50 years back. Prof.Bhim Singh also expressed homage for the student martyrs who were killed in Poonch, Udhampur and Kishtwar during that movement in 1966 seeking university for Jammu and other civil rights for the people of entire Jammu province.
