Traffic woes: 100 new vehicles added to city roads everyday

JAMMU: With attractive bank loans and competitive car prices, around 150 new vehicles are touching down the winter capital city roads on a daily average.
Most of the vehicles in middle segments of cars are fresh purchases from showrooms in the town. While the Regional Transport Office in Jammu is registering over 100 new vehicles almost every day, at least 80 of them are added to Jammu city's already congested roads while 20 could be belonging to the consumers from other parts of the region.
The Jammuites who are already having a tough time as they remain trapped in ever increasing traffic jams for hours together during peak hours will face a tough time in the near future if the pattern of new purchases and registration of vehicles is any indication to go by.
The number of vehicles is following a steady increase in Jammu region even after the demonetisation. With the Darbar Move in Jammu, the number of vehicles increased as thousands of Vehicles come to the Jammu City which also increases the Vehicular population in the Jammu city.
Talking to The News Now, A K Khajuria, Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Jammu said that RTO Office is registering about 150-160 vehicles on a daily basis and there are about 7.5 lakh vehicle registered in the Jammu province and out of this the Vehicular population in Jammu district is 6.5 lakh.
About 82 percent of the vehicles are private owned and about 18 percent are the commercial vehicles, he added.
"Last year the RTO Office Jammu registered about 41,000 vehicles. This year from January 1, the Office has registered about 4500 vehicles.
Pertinent to mention here that the JMC has plans to install new intelligent traffic lights within the Jammu city which are in the final stage. The Jammu city will get about 64 intelligent traffic lights under AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) in which the old 30 fixed time standalone Traffic Signal System in the Jammu city which will be upgraded to intelligent traffic signal system and 34 new traffic lights which will be installed at the new locations by the JMC.
