JAMMU: Fatima Sana Shaikh, who has played the role of Commonwealth Games 2010 gold medalist wrestler Geeta Kumari Phogat in Amir Khan's film "Dangal" and has become immensely popular since, has roots in Jammu and Kashmir and also very deep and close links both with Jammu as well as Srinagar.
Fatima's father, Vipan Sharma, is a Brahmin from Jammu while her mother Raj Tabassum is a Muslim from Srinagar.
The family is one of the best examples of communal harmony and also bridges the rift between Jammu and Kashmir.
Talking to The News Now, Rocky Sharma, the paternal uncle (Chacha) of Fatima Sana Shaikh, said, "I am really proud of my niece. Very few people know that both the summer and winter capitals of the state can boast of having links with Fatima".
Sana's father Vipan Sharma settled in Mumbai in late 1980s and has many relatives in Jammu, while her mother Raj Tabassum belongs to Srinagar. Sana's paternal relatives live in Jammu, while her maternal blood relations are in Kashmir.
"Though Fatima Sana has been acting since 1997, she has scaled new heights of fame and success now after playing the role of Geeta Phogat in Aamir Khan's movie and also sharing the screen with the star. We all are more than happy and feel proud of her," said Rocky Sharma.
He added that it is only Fatima's hard work and dedication and full support of her parents because of which she has reached such heights.
Rocky Sharma, a businessman, who is a resident of Trikuta Nagar locality, said, "All our family members are in Jammu, but our elder brother Vipan Sharma shifted to Mumbai in late 80s while looking for a job. As he had many friends there, he started sound equipment business in the film industry and slowly and gradually got success in the same. Later, he fell in love with Raj Tabassum, who belonged to a Muslim family of Srinagar and got married to her."
Born in 1992 in Mumbai, Fatima Sana Shaikh, who plays the role of the grown up Geeta Phogat in Nitesh Tiwari-directed wrestling biopic "Dangal", was first seen on the silver screen in 1997 in Kamal Hasan's "Chachi 420".
"Fatima has visited Jammu a lot of times and spent days here at our Trikuta Nagar residence and at the New Plot residence of her "bua" (paternal aunt)," said Rocky, who has also acted with Fatima in a Hindi television serial "Noor Jahan" some years back.
Fatima Sana Shaikh is also a photographer. Prior to the release of "Dangal", she was best known for her role as baby girl Bharti in "Chachi 420". She has acted in many films and television serials.
In 2001, Fatima appeared in Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla starrer movie "One-2-Ka-4".
The same year, she played the role of Zoya in Indian drama film "Tahaan". Then she worked in a comedy film "Bittoo Boss" in 2012, romantic film "Akaash Vani" in 2013 and then this inspirational movie Dangal.
Sana is herself a big fan of Aamir Khan.
Fatima's relatives say that she is an example for girls from Jammu and Kashmir who should work hard and feel proud as Indian. In one of her photos in wrestling costume which Fatima uploaded on Facebook, she says, "I love my India. Proud to have that on my back".
