Akriti Jamwal talked to Sonia Kaur for this week’s ‘We the Women’:

Tell us briefly about yourself and your background?
I am Sonia Kaur. I am an actress putting in my skills to work in different Television shows. I belong to a Sikh family from Jammu. My family still resides in Jammu. Being a Jammu girl has always been a matter of pride for me as the place has gone a long way in teaching me many things which have helped me in various spheres of life.

What are the instances that led you into this field of acting?
I had started with some projects for Jammu media, at age of 19. The initial appreciation my talent garnered from viewers, especially those who were the known ones in the entertainment industry, really motivated me a lot. I was one of the contenders in the famous reality show 'Rahul Dulhaniya Le Jaayega' (Swayamvar Season 2) and after that I debuted with Sony TV's show 'Hum Hai Na as Anamika'.

What have been your major achievements so far, both personal and public? To whom would you credit them?
As an actress my biggest achievement is my work. I have done three daily soaps for Sony channel; first was ‘Hum Hai Na’ as Anamika and recent one was ‘Bade Bhaiya ki Bulhniya’. I have also acted in many episodic shows in Savdhan India, Crime Patrol, CID, Yeh Hai Ashiqui and many more. I am happy that I could be a part of TV Industry. Another personal achievement is the love and support I received from the fans. It gives great sense of achievement when other girls admire you and aspire to be who you are. I credit my family, especially my mother because she has been a strong pillar on whom my personal and professional life weighs.

How would you contrast your life before and after you started working for the TV?
There is no big difference before and after I started appearing on Television. I feel the same for myself. I didn’t swell with pride or changed much just because I became an actress. But my experience with the people, with the world completely turned 180 degrees. It is obvious that when I was not in this field, I was an ordinary girl but now people treat me different; I am treated like I am someone very special, people appreciate my work, give support and love. It is exuberating.

Tell us about your expectation and reality of the Television world?
I never expected anything much, to be honest. Before entering the entertainment world, all I could see was the glamour but once you are in, you realize that it is not easy to work in TV shows or Films. It requires so much hard-work and patience, without which you will not survive at all, that you forget about the glamour in the first place. While there may be many stories afloat in the outside world, the truth is that immense talent as well as hard work is essential to stay and excel in this field.

Share with us any bittersweet experience of the B-town?
I have always received positive response from my celeb- friends and my co actors. But I have experienced that sometimes you cannot be friendly and comfortable with your co actors. When I was in Rahul Mahajan’s reality show, I faced lot of troubles with the other contenders. So far it has been the worst experience till now. I am past it now; I have learnt a lot since then and came far from that point.

What are your future plans? And what would be your strategy to go about it?
Right now I am just looking forward to enjoy my holidays. I have already planned my New Year’s eve with my family. Other than that I am waiting for the right show and whenever I land up with a good one I am looking forward to work again. Since I still trust only people of Jammu, I would love to marry a Jammu guy but I would also like to add that I have no plans to get married any time soon.

What is that one thing that keeps you moving on; that motivates you to do what you are doing?
I am addicted to my work; I love being in front of camera and on screen; I Love the sound of three words ‘Roll, Camera and Action’ and of course ‘Pack-up’; I want to shine in TV industry; All this keeps me moving on.

What would be your suggestion to all those who also aspire to be a TV star?
Be honest to yourself and your work. Work very very very hard. Mumbai is extremely challenging. So if you aspire to be a TV star, prepare yourself for it; not just your skills but also mentally. It could be straining at times but once you achieve your goals it is worth the entire struggle.

Any Message for Women of Jammu and Kashmir?
Make our Jammu and Kashmir, known for its talent; show people that girls of J&K are capable. For outer world we are small town girls; show them that we are strong and we can do anything; better than anyone else.
