To have those gorgeous tresses in winters remember this mantra “Keep’em Shiny and Bouncy!! Mind those frizzes!! And Keep the Dandruff at bay!!”

Like I said in last article, winters can be a challenge to the skin and hair; the chill can take away the moisture leaving your skin and hair, dull and dry. Last week we covered the regime for skin to be followed during winters and as promised this week I will tell you how to take care of your tresses. The cold weather can create havoc on your hair. These are tried and tested, hair care tips from experts. These are basic tips, of which most of us are aware but often forget. Let's brush them up.

Keep your locks silky and lustrous with the following tips.
• Winter is the time when there is too much static happening around you. From the pullovers and sweaters you wear to the scarves, caps and gloves, even the combs, everything will cause static around you which in turn, leads to frizzy hair. When combing your hair, use a vented hair brush that has a combination of plastic and boar bristles. You can even try wooden combs.
• Wash your hair only with lukewarm water, not hot or cold water. Avoid exposing your hair to water at extreme temperatures.
• Apply a leave-in conditioner to keep hair smooth, if not, just be generous with the conditioner. A hair conditioner is a must, Apply a suitable conditioner each time you wash your hair, focusing only on the strands of hair, avoiding the scalp. This provides a shine to your hair and prevents it from breakage. A tip: apply conditioner from hair around shoulders to the tips.
• Avoid using a hairdryer. Ideally, it is always good to let your hair dry naturally. If you are using a hairdryer, don't over dry your hair as it will leave it frizzy and damaged. Try to set your hairdryer on the 'cool' mode as it is gentler, although it might be a little time consuming.
• Cover your crown to protect your hair from the cold. Make sure to wear a scarf or a hat to lock in the moisture of your tresses and to save it from breakage. Keep your hair tied up as much as possible, particularly when out and about, and especially when exercising.
• Trim your hair! It is essential to refresh your haircut regularly in order to get rid of split ends. Aim to get it done every six to eight weeks, as this will promote healthy hair and hair growth.
• Winters make your scalp go dry and itchy, and with little moisture in the air, the scalp will start getting flaky and extra dry, leading to dandruff. So to keep check on dandruff naturally, heat or warm up your hair oil and mix it with some lemon juice squeezed out of fresh lemon and give yourself a refreshing head massage. Alternatively, you can choose to apply this lemon juice on your scalp first, rubbing it over and through your scalp, and then massage completely with the heated hair oil.

• Invest in a good quality shampoo and conditioner to get a healthy shine. However, avoid using too much of shampoo, as it is a fact that due to cold winter winds, your hair and scalp are left dry. Wash your hair not more than twice a week and use lukewarm water to avoid frizzes and to maximize moisture. Try not to leave the house with wet hair. The cold weather can freeze the hair at the cuticle and cause it to break.
• Invest in good quality hair serum. They not only help to combat frizzes but also gives your hair shine to strut.
• In winters, with extra drying of the scalp and with frizz, your hair can tend to lose a lot of its shine and bounce. Brush out your hair to remove tangles and apply honey over the roots and hair. Cover up your hair in a shower cap or towel and leave it on for about 30 minutes. Wash off with lukewarm water. This will help restore shine and bounce to dull damaged hair. This one treatment that you cannot miss when your aim is winter hair care!
• If you use heat styling tools, like curling tongs or hair straighteners, then you must always use a good quality, nourishing heat defense spray or leave-in conditioner to protect your hair and keep it looking glossy and hydrated. This is especially important during winter, when cold wind, rain and the added heat from styling tools all contribute to hair damage.
• Use natural oil. In extreme weather, be it winter or summer, it is essential to put moisture back in your hair to prevent it from breaking. Moisturize your hair once a week with a hot oil treatment to promote a healthy scalp and nourished hair. Some natural oils that work particularly well include coconut oil, olive oil, castor oil, avocado oil and almond oil. PROCEDURE: Warm two teaspoons of oil and massage it slowly through your scalp. This slow massaging helps the oil penetrate deep into the roots. A warm oil massage will give your hair shine and remove dandruff and frizz, while also controlling hair breakage.
• Add a hair treatment mask once a week to your hair care routine to keep your locks healthy! To check out hair masks for hair that will do best during winters, you have to wait for a week.
