Supreme Court to review validity of Article 370 abrogation on May 1

Jammu: Supreme Court is set to review the validity of the Union government's 2019 decision to abrogate Article 370 of the Constitution, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. The pleas seeking the review of the judgment, where the court upheld the validity of the decision, is scheduled to be heard on May 1.
The legal journey began when the Indian government, led by the Home Minister Amit Shah, introduced the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill in the Rajya Sabha on August 5, 2019. The bill, which was promptly passed by both houses of Parliament and received the President’s assent by August 9, led to the bifurcation of the state into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. This effectively removed the special status accorded to the region under Article 370 of the Indian Constitution.
The Supreme Court’s initial decision came after hearing 23 petitions challenging the abrogation of Article 370. The proceedings lasted 16 days, culminating on September 5, 2023, when the Court reserved its judgment, which later affirmed the central government’s action as lawful.
The reconsideration plea aims to challenge the previous ruling on various grounds, including the manner and implications of the decision on the region and its people.
