While the organ transplant facility was not earlier available in Jammu but in a first, two patients have applied for the renal transplant with the onset of kidney transplant facility soon at Super Speciality Hospital.The wait for an organ transplant facility in Jammu will soon come to an end. The first kidney transplant is expected to take place here by the end this month or in the first week of May. The specialist doctors from renowned Mumbai based Jaslok Hospital will also provide their services and all preparations are being made in the Super Specialty Hospital for the first ever transplant.The Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu will be the third hospital in Jammu and Kashmir to have this facility. Under the National Health Mission, patients have been provided dialysis facility in all district hospitals but till date the facility of kidney transplant was available only in SKIMS and Srinagar GMC. The Directorate General of Health, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, had recently issued the certificate for kidney transplant to the Government Medical College Jammu and the facility has been approved for five years following which preparations are in full swing and two patients have also registered for it.Two patients from Jammu have also got themselves registered for kidney transplant and one of them has also completed all other formalities from the donors while the renal specialists, doctors from urology department have also examined the patient. The doctors have already been trained at PGI Chandigarh and some doctors have gone to Ahmedabad in Gujarat for a specialised course.A doctor from Jaslok Hospital can also provide his services for the kidney transplant to take place at Super Speciality Hospital, Jammu. A team of doctors from the Department of Urology, Department of Nephrology and Department of Anesthesia of GMC Jammu will render their services.The facility is going to start in Jammu itself and it is a matter of happiness for all. Doctors and paramedical staff have been trained.Notably, for kidney transplant, patients previously prefered to go to Punjab or Delhi and although a few months ago, the Srinagar Medical College also got approval for organ transplantation.
