JAMMU: ‘Honesty is the best Policy’ is an old and time tested saying. Literally, honesty means selfless and God fearing. But the real meaning of honesty has lost in oblivion in the modern times. That doesn’t mean that there are no honest persons in this world. There are ofcourse honest people but in less numbers than selfish, corrupt and dishonest. Being honest otherwise depends upon one’s nature and atmosphere, in which a person lives. In fact both will have a reason to justify their choice. This is also true that we can’t expect from someone to be truly honest or right, as the world we are living in, has become too materialistic and there is almost no place for what is called ethics or moral values like in the past.
The News Now talked to some Jammuites to know their views and opinions in this regard. Here is what they say.

It’s not about which path takes you to prosperity and which doesn’t; it is all about the time taken to reach your destination depending on the path you choose. Going by the dishonest way make you rich faster but that is very short-lived. If you want to become rich following the path of honesty then it may take a long time but once you reach there, you would definitely find all your efforts worth it. It is in the basic nature of human beings to enjoy respect and recognition on a societal level and going by the unfair means would never help you get this. But for people like me who believe in Karma, becoming rich by unfair means is never an option at all. But if given the option to choose any between being honest and poor or dishonest and rich, I would always prefer being honest no matter whether I become rich or not.
Raman Kashyap
There is a popular notion that people who have got rich have done so by grabbing out the shares of other people or by exploiting them. Honest people generally do not get many opportunities and hence they remain poor while dishonest people try to grab every other opportunity by unfair means leading them to prosperity which otherwise is not a real prosperity. There have been many scams wherein a handful of greedy people have earned fortunes by cheating several other people, but in such cases, the arguments end since it is clearly evident that such people sooner or later languish in jails.
Ashish Koul
I agree with what is taught to us by our elders and great personalities that honesty is the best policy. But the current scenario of society seems to differ from the fact. The gap between rich and the poor is widening day by day. The upper class though having all kinds of resources that too more than sufficient doesn’t care about others and always try to exploit the poor and destitute ones. God has sent us on this earth to enjoy life and I don’t think there is something wrong if we speak lie or do something which is dishonesty for someone else.
Raman Kohli
In my opinion, one should not be too honest, otherwise he or she will have to suffer as the world today is full of lies and frauds. Lie, truth, honesty, dishonesty all are manmade concepts. Only angels or complete idiots never lie. Often in the real world, it is hard to distinguish one from another. Lie tells about the person more than truth to a wise observer. People lie because they like to be seen what they want to be, covering what they really are. And this is not dishonesty at all.
Sahil Gupta
Although honesty is the best, but it depends upon the situation, an individual is facing. A person can be completely honest when he has almost everything available. Such person doesn’t care as to how others behave with him because he has all the resources to lead a luxurious life. But because of this, they often come in the sight of corrupt and dishonest people and as a result are harassed physically as well as mentally. It happens only in Bollywood movies that the hero fights with all odds and gets justice for him and his family, but in practical life nothing like that happens.
