Imran, Matto among three candidates in fray for SMC Mayor seat

Srinagar: Three candidates including a former Mayor and Deputy Mayor Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) are in fray for the vacant seat of Mayor SMC seat, election of which will be held next week, officials said.
As per the reports, the last date for the filling nominations papers for the post of Mayor Srinagar Municipal Corporation ended today after the date of elections for the vacant seat was announced by the officials.
Deputy Mayor SMC Parvaiz Qadri while talking to TNN said, “As many as three candidates have filled nomination papers for the post of Mayor Srinagar Municipal Corporation which includes former Mayor SMC Junaid Azim Matto, ex Deputy Mayor SMC Sheikh Imran and a Congress candidate Aijaz Rasool”.
He added that election will be held on 25th November, while as every councilor have been asked to report at the council hall on time.
Asked about the procedure of selection for vacant post of Mayor SMC, Qadri said, “All the three candidates have to prove majority. For instance, if every councilor is present, then any of the three candidates who show a majority of 36 votes will win, otherwise next round of voting will be held”.
He added, “The round of voting will continue till any of the candidate’s shows majority of 50 percent of total votes during the meeting”.
It is pertinent to mention here that Former Mayor SMC Junaid Azim Matto had failed to show a majority in a no-confidence motion filed against him by Councilors in the month of June, following which the elections which were to be held in July. However, amid Covid-19 pandemic, the elections were deferred to three months.
While as in the month of September, the officials sitting Covid-19 pandemic again deferred the election for three months. While, SMC in a notification yesterday had announced that elections for the vacant seat of SMC Mayor, which be held on November 25, instead of December.
While as yesterday, the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference has filed the petition against the elections for vacant seat of Mayor SMS, while calling it violation of Model Code of Conduct.
