Two slip to death in Kupwara well

SRINAGAR: In second such instance within a week, two persons have died after they slipped into a well while cleaning it in Kupwara district of north Kashmir on Thursday.
Four persons had died in a similar incident in the district exactly a week ago.
Locals informed that two persons died inside a well and later were retrieved by a joint team of Police, SDRF and locals at Chalgund Halmatpora village.
They said that they fell unconscious while cleaning a well at Ganai Mohalla in Halmatpora following which a police team was rushed to the spot.
“Later the duo was retrieved by a joint team of Police, SDRF and locals after hectic efforts,” said the reports quoting locals.
Official sources informed that the duo, Ghulam Nabi Khan (35) and Ghulam Mohi-udin Ganai (50) went inside the well, located in Ganie Mohalla, to clean it. However they slipped.
“Subsequently locals besides teams from SDRF and police rushed to the spot and started a massive rescue operation to retrieve them. A 25-year-old youth Shariq Ahmad Khan, a local youth fell unconscious while being part of the rescue efforts and was immediately referred to nearby by hospital,” they said.
The overall rescue operation continued for more than two hours, they added.
Block Medical Officer (BMO) Kupwara, Dr. Zaffar Akbar told KNO that the duo was brought dead to the hospital and further medical procedure was underway and a postmortem will also be conducted.
Earlier, on July 2, four persons including two real brothers had died after falling in a well they were working in at Singhdan area of Krusan Wavura of Kralpora in the district
“The persons have probably died of asphyxiation after remaining trapped inside the well for few hours”, the official had said then.
