JAMMU: In a significant development, Ladakh has become ‘corona-free’ with all active patients of Covid-19 cured on Monday evening.
While 24 of total 43 positive cases had recovered earlier, Ladakh started the day with 19 active patients all from Leh district of the union territory.
In an early morning bulletin, the Ladakh administration informed that seventeen of the nineteen COVID-19 patients were discharged from the hospital after being cured of the disease, leaving only two active cases in Ladakh.
While Kargil district was declared COVID-19 free on May 15 after the last two patients, including a two-year-old boy, were declared cured and subsequently discharged, the remaining 19 active cases were in Leh district and the second negative report of 17 of them was received on Sunday.
“They were discharged from the COVID hospital on Monday,” an official said in the morning, adding that two cases were now left in Leh district and the condition of both of them is stable.
However, around 11 pm, Rigzin Samphel, Commissioner Secretary, Health and Medical Education,Union Territory of Ladakh broke the good news about the cold desert becoming Corona-free.
“No active case in Ladakh as of now,” Samphel wrote on Twitter.
However, the officials believe that the fight against the deadly disease is far from over.
“We had brought the positive cases to a bare minimum in mid-April but then we saw the infections grow three times. We have to remain careful and maintain social distancing. Besides, the testing of all incoming persons will continue,” a senior official said.
