JAMMU: In an unpleasant incident, the national flag fell off the flagpole in Rajouri district when Sub-District Magistrate Thanamandi was hoisting the tricolor during the Republic Day celebration at a stadium here on Sunday.
The flag’s string snapped when the SDM Thanamandi Mukhtiyar Sheikh seemingly tugged at it hard. However, SDM maintained his composure and instructed his subordinates and the flag keeper to hold up the flag for the ceremonial salute.
The incident, however, became the talk of the town and subject of tongue-wagering after its video went viral.
“The flag rope was found broken and it dashed to the ground, which caused great embarrassment to the SDM, besides inflicting insult on the national flag,” the eyewitnesses said.
The incident, however, set the stage of mudslinging after inquiry of the incident was set into motion. The cognisance by the district administration was taken after The News Now brought the issue before DC Rajouri Sheikh Nazir.
Nazir has assured appropriate action after probing the incident.
Sources said that government had issued order on for flag hoisting ceremony in Thandamandi and for its celebration, had entrusted the responsibility to the Station House Officer Thanamandi, Principal Model High Secondary School and Commandant 38 RR of the Indian Army.
