Corporator alleges assault in SMC meeting, Mayor denies

SRINAGAR: The meeting hall of Srinagar Municipal Corporation turned into a fighting ground on Thursday after the Corporators had a scuffle during the meeting, resulting in grievous injuries to one of the Corporators.

While the injured corporator alleged he was beaten by the supporter of Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu, the political advisor to Mattu denied that any scuffle broke out at the meeting hall.

The brawl allegedly took place during the meeting which was called to review the Standing Committee Elections Mayor Mattu.
As per the reports, Corporator from ward 72 of Zakura Srinagar, Abdul Wahid Dar received the injuries after he was allegedly beaten by other Corporators who were present during the meeting.
Sharing the detail about the incident, Abdul Wahid Dar said, “A meeting was called today to review the Standing Committee Elections in Srinagar Municipal Corporation and it was headed by Mayor SMC Junaid Mattu.”
“Mayor had said all the Corporators will be provided two day training for the election as to how to caste vote and other processes. But the training never took place and today during the election when I raised the voice I was beaten to pulp”, Dar added.
“Once I raised my voice, the Corporators backed by the Mayor SMC attacked me,” Dar said.
He alleged that Corporater from Rathpora Eidgah removed the pheran (traditional attire) and attacked him while Corporator from Zadibal lifted a mic and hit his nose with it.
“Later I was taken to hospital where I received four stitches. I was beaten in front of Mayor Srinagar Municipal Corporation and he did not dare to utter a single word nor bother to stop all of this,” Dar further alleged.
However, Political Advisor of Mattu, Sheikh Firdous while talking to The News Now denied the allegation that any scuffle broke out at the meeting hall of Srinagar Municipal Corporation.
He said that the Corporator Dar received injuries as he fell down and was not beaten by any Corporator.
