Bathinda-Jammu Gas Pipeline: Entity seeks extension till Dec 2023, says GoI

Jammu: The 725 kilometers long, upcoming Bhatinda–Jammu–Srinagar project is likely to see more hurdles as the executing agency, which has been tasked to restart the decade old ambitious project, has requested the government for extension till December 2023.
Over 6000 crore- project has been awarded to GSPL India Gasnet Limited (GIGL) to build the pipeline to provide in 2011.
However due to paucity of funds and lack of administrative push; it saw no progress in more than a decade.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has decided to restart the project after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her 2021 budget speech announced funds allocation for a gas pipeline project in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
“The agency is supposed to begin the work in February 2022 Original.
However, the entity has requested the government for extension till December 2023,” Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas informed in the parliament.
Sources further said that the executing agency has been asked to conduct fresh surveys while keeping in view of ongoing Delhi- Katra expressway work.
As per the details of the project, this onshore gas pipeline, with a maximum diameter of 24 inches, will start in Punjab and end in Jammu and Kashmir.
“The pipeline has been proposed to run from Bathinda, Punjab through Jammu and Srinagar cities with a proposed capacity of 15.48 billion cubic meters per year,” officials added.
“The gas pipeline will pass through the districts of Kathua, Samba, Jammu, Udhampur, Ramban, Anantnag and Srinagar,” they said and added, “With this, the people of the J&K will get LPG at their doorstep”.
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board authorized GSPL GSPL India Gasnet Limited (GIGL) to build the pipeline.
Sources said that during the period 2021-2025, the Bhatinda–Jammu–Srinagar project is expected to witness huge capital investment.
