Justice DY Chandrachud set to become 50th Chief Justice of India, CJI UU Lalit recommends name

New Delhi: Chief Justice of India UU Lalit on Tuesday recommended the name of Justice DY Chandrachud as his successor. The CJI is set to retire on November 8 this year after a short 74 day tenure. The government had set the process of appointing the next head of the Indian judiciary in motion last week, asking Justice Lalit to recommend his successor.
"As per the MoP on appointment of Chief Justice of India and Supreme Court Judges, today the Minister of Law and Justice sent a letter to the Chief Justice of India for sending his recommendations for appointment of his successor," the Ministryhad tweeted on Friday.

The Memorandum of Proceedure is a document which guides the appointment and transfer of Supreme Court and high court judges. Justice D Y Chandrachud is the senior-most judge after the CJI. Going by the established practice and convention, he will take oath as the 50th Chief Justice on November 9. He would have tenure of two years and demit office on November 10, 2024.
