Jammu At least eight people were killed and 20 others injured in a series of road accidents reported from different parts of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, with five fatalities reported after an SUV plunged into the Kishanganga river in Kupwara and three people killed in separate accidents in the Jammu division.
In the deadliest incident, five people were killed and six others injured after an SUV plunged into the Kishanganga river along the Seemari road in the Teetwal area of Karnah-Tangdhar in Kupwara district, officials said.
The accident took place on Monday, following which a rescue operation was launched immediately. The injured were rescued and shifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed grief over the loss of lives and directed the district administration to ensure the best possible treatment for those injured.
“Deeply pained by the loss of lives in an unfortunate road accident in Kupwara. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Praying for the early recovery of the injured. I have directed the district administration to ensure best possible treatment to the injured,” Sinha said in a post on X.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also expressed deep grief over the accident in Karnah-Tangdhar.
“The chief minister expressed deep grief over the tragic road accident in Karnah-Tangdhar, Kupwara, in which five persons lost their lives and several others were injured,” the Chief Minister’s Office said in a post on X.
Omar Abdullah conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and directed the administration and medical authorities to extend the best possible treatment to all those injured.
Meanwhile, three men, including a BSF trooper, were killed and 14 others injured in separate road accidents in Kathua, Jammu, Rajouri and Kishtwar districts of the Jammu division.
In Kathua district, Raj Kumar and Gablesh Kumar, both residents of Bani, were killed after their car skidded off a hilly road and plunged into a gorge near Satasar along the Bani-Basholi road on Monday afternoon.
Rescuers recovered the bodies from the mangled wreckage of the vehicle following the accident.
In another incident in Jammu district, BSF trooper Ved Paul Singh, a resident of Ratnal village, died after falling from a tractor near his house in the Bishnah area.
Officials said Singh was on leave at the time of the incident and was scheduled to retire next month.
In Rajouri district, eight passengers, including two women, were injured after a mini-bus overturned near Kainchi Morh. The vehicle was travelling from Kotranka Kandi towards Rajouri when the accident occurred. The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Another six people were injured after a vehicle turned turtle at Drubeel in the Chatroo area of Kishtwar district, officials said.
The series of accidents were reported from separate locations across Jammu and Kashmir, prompting rescue and emergency response operations by local authorities.
