Srinagar: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday said the expansion of the Jammu and Kashmir Council of Ministers will take place, with the process expected to move forward after August 15.

Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Omar confirmed that a cabinet expansion is planned, while clarifying that it is not expected before August 15 due to the ongoing Independence Day preparations.

On pending appointments for outstanding sportspersons, the Chief Minister said around 230 appointment letters will be issued. He added that Sports Minister Satish Sharma has assured athletes that the process will be completed in the coming weeks.

Omar Abdullah also said Jammu and Kashmir will focus on developing sports beyond cricket. He highlighted gymnastics, martial arts, roller sports, kayaking, canoeing and water sports as areas that need greater attention.

On the Centre-opposition differences in Parliament, Omar said the opposition has the right to raise issues, while the government should respond to them. He expressed hope that Parliament will function smoothly during the remaining part of the session.

Commenting on protests and violence in Jharkhand, the Chief Minister said protests should remain peaceful and the situation should not be allowed to worsen.

On drinking water concerns, particularly in Kashmir, Omar said the government is committed to providing people with clean and safe drinking water. He said water supplied through government schemes, including the Jal Jeevan Mission, will be treated and must meet the required quality standards.

Reacting to reports of sexual crimes in Kashmir, Omar called such incidents “a shame” and said those responsible should be arrested immediately and punished strictly.

He also stressed that the laws introduced after the Nirbhaya case should be properly implemented in Jammu and Kashmir.
