KULGAM, June 1: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha led the “Drug-Free J&K Padyatra” in Kulgam, calling for sustained public participation to eliminate drug abuse and strengthen communities across Jammu and Kashmir.
Addressing a gathering, Sinha said the anti-drug campaign has evolved into a people’s movement, bringing together parents, teachers, religious leaders, youth volunteers and the administration with a common goal of making villages and towns free from the menace of drugs.
He said the fight against narcotics is not only a public health challenge but also a matter of national security, alleging that drug trafficking helps finance terrorism and extremist activities. He stressed that curbing the drug trade would weaken networks involved in destabilizing the region and exploiting young people.
Highlighting the administration’s efforts over the past 51 days, the Lieutenant Governor said coordinated operations had targeted drug smugglers and traffickers across Jammu and Kashmir. According to official figures, 923 FIRs have been registered, more than 1,000 individuals arrested, over 55 traffickers detained under PIT-NDPS provisions, 668 driving licences cancelled and recommendations made for the cancellation of 124 passports.
Sinha said the administration’s strategy extends beyond enforcement measures and includes public awareness campaigns, disruption of supply chains and rehabilitation of individuals affected by addiction.
Expressing confidence in the ongoing campaign, he said collective efforts would help free young people from drug abuse and contribute to a safer and stronger Jammu and Kashmir.
