Budgam, May 5: Manoj Sinha on Tuesday led a large padyatra in Budgam as part of the ongoing Drug-Free J&K campaign, asserting that authorities will take firm and coordinated action against drug smugglers across the region.
Addressing participants, he called for a united public response against drug abuse, urging families, community groups, and leaders to actively support the campaign. He stressed that the growing menace of narcotics is damaging the future of youth and weakening the social fabric.
The Lieutenant Governor announced the formation of an informal “Parents Brigade” in villages and towns to create a volunteer network of parents, women, and youth. The initiative aims to detect early signs of drug addiction and connect affected families with timely support and rehabilitation services.
Highlighting the human impact of addiction, he said every young life lost to drugs is a setback for society and the nation. He emphasized that those struggling with addiction should be treated with compassion, describing them as victims in need of care rather than punishment.
He also urged society to break the stigma around drug abuse so that families can seek help openly. “Silence will not solve this problem; awareness and collective action are essential,” he said.
Calling drug trafficking a serious security concern, the Lieutenant Governor noted that the illegal trade not only harms individuals but is also linked to wider threats such as terrorism and radicalization.
He said law enforcement agencies have been directed to identify and act against drug peddlers within a fixed timeframe, adding that financial networks linked to drug cartels are under close surveillance. Strict action, he warned, will extend to major traffickers as well.
Appealing for public cooperation, he asked citizens to report any suspicious activities and support the administration’s efforts to eliminate the drug menace. He expressed confidence that with collective resolve, Budgam can set an example in the fight against drugs.
