Leh: The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Vinai Kumar Saxena, on Friday launched an ambitious water conservation initiative—Project Him Sarovar—aimed at addressing the region’s growing water scarcity through scientific snow harvesting.
The project, rolled out across Leh and Kargil, marks a significant intervention in the cold desert region where water remains a critical lifeline. With excavation work already underway, 50 small water bodies are being developed to capture and store snowmelt and glacial runoff that typically goes unused each year.
Each structure, designed with standard dimensions, will help create a dependable irrigation source for farmers struggling with limited water availability. Officials said the initiative is tailored to Ladakh’s unique geography and climate, ensuring both sustainability and efficiency.
Calling it a historic step, Saxena said the project represents a scientific approach to one of Ladakh’s most pressing challenges. He noted that the initiative was fast-tracked soon after he assumed office in March, with directions issued to identify suitable locations and implement a time-bound plan.
Beyond irrigation, the project is expected to support local livelihoods and contribute to ecological restoration. Authorities plan to integrate plantation drives alongside the water bodies, enhancing green cover and strengthening environmental resilience.
The Lieutenant Governor also linked the initiative to the broader vision of Narendra Modi, which focuses on restoring degraded land across the country. He highlighted that Ladakh is already witnessing visible impacts of climate change, including reduced snowfall, receding glaciers, and declining water tables.
The project has received support from key institutions, including the Indian Army, ITBP, and BRO, along with active participation from local communities.
Emphasising a balanced approach, Saxena called for the preservation of traditional irrigation systems alongside modern conservation techniques, urging collective efforts to build sustainable “green and blue assets” for Ladakh’s future.
