Vaishno Devi pilgrims flock to Gummat  Bazaar despite price disparities

Vikram Sharma

JAMMU: Gummat Bazaar, the oldest marketplace in Jammu city, continues to thrive as a bustling hub of activity despite the rapid development of other markets in the area. This iconic bazaar remains a favored destination for both rural and urban customers, offering a mix of tradition and commerce that has stood the test of time.

Strategically located, Gummat Bazaar is bifurcated into Lower and Upper Gummat. It begins at the General Bus Stand and connects to the heart of the city at Raghunath Bazaar, providing shoppers with a wide variety of products across all price ranges.

Its appeal also extends to out-of-state visitors, especially pilgrims of Vaishno Devi, who frequent the market regardless of pricing disparities. A local tea stall owner, preferring to remain anonymous, mentioned that many rural customers visit Gummat Bazaar under the impression that it offers cheaper options than other markets.

Historically, Upper Gummat, also known as “Kabbadi Bazaar” (scrap market), served as a dumping ground for city scrap. Over the decades, it has transformed to align with modern market trends, shedding its earlier image as a hub for scrap dealings.

In contrast, Lower Gummat retains much of its original character, including its association with quack dentists and key makers who established their businesses here decades ago. Over time, shops catering to various needs have sprouted in the area, adding to its vibrancy.

However, Gummat Bazaar is also notorious for hosting unregulated medical practices, particularly in dentistry. Quacks with basic appliances and dentures often set up shop, offering questionable services to unsuspecting customers.

A police official from the Lower Gummat post acknowledged that such activities have persisted for decades, largely overlooked by the administration. Kirti Gupta, president of the Lower Gummat Shopkeepers Association, while refraining from directly addressing the issue of quack dentists, noted that some of these practitioners were once technicians for professional dentists.

He emphasized the historical significance of the bazaar, which dates back to pre-independence times when it was known for its finger ring sellers. Gupta also highlighted the bazaar’s collaboration with the Jammu Municipal Corporation and the police to maintain order and uphold its longstanding reputation.

Despite its challenges, Gummat Bazaar remains a vital part of Jammu’s commercial and cultural dominion. Its enduring popularity reflects its ability to adapt to changing times while preserving its historical essence. However, addressing concerns like unregulated practices would ensure the bazaar continues to thrive responsibly, benefiting both customers and the community at large.
