It is choking voice of people in my Constituency Baramulla: Engineer Rashid
AUG 6: Jailed Baramulla MP Sheikh Abdul Rashid alias Engineer Rashid on Wednesday apprised to the Delhi High Court about his absence from Parliament Session stating the failure to pay daily travel expenses imposed on him, adding, it is choking voice of my Constituency.
While appearing before a bench of Justices Vivek Chaudhary and Anup Jairam Bhambhani, Er Rashid picked holes in the order passed by a coordinate bench and mooted changes.
As outlined in the order, Er Rashid has to deposit Rs 4 lakh with the prison authorities as travel expenses for attending ongoing Parliament Session.
Notably, in the course of hearing, the bench ruled that when custody parole is granted, it is ordinarily at the cost of the person.
Senior advocate N Hariharan, advocating for Er Rashid said, “He is unable to pay the cost and not allowing him to attend the parliament will be considered as playing with his democratic rights.”
While condemning the imposition, senior lawyer said that these are conditions imposed to make sure that woes of Baramulla constituency remain unheard.
Senior lawyer pointed out that he is not seeking a review of the order but proposes some amendments.
Hearing this, the bench posted the matter for August 12, 2025.
Baramulla MP Engineer Rashid, who emerged victorious against CM Omar Abdullah and MLA Sajad Lone in the 2024 Lok Sabha Polls, is facing trial in a terror funding case. Rashid behind bars in Delhi’s Tihar Jail since 2019 after the NIA apprehended him in 2017 terror-funding case.
