Amarnath Yatra 2025

IAS-JKAS officers deployed; CRPF, Army, Police conduct extensive security reviews to ensure a safe pilgrimage

JUNE 19: As the countdown begins for the annual Amarnath Yatra 2025, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has put in place a comprehensive master plan to ensure the smooth and secure conduct of the sacred pilgrimage. Scheduled to commence on July 3, the 38-day yatra will take devotees to the revered cave shrine of Lord Shiva located at an altitude of 3,880 metres in the Himalayas of South Kashmir. The first batch of pilgrims will depart from Jammu’s Bhagwati Nagar base camp on July 2.

To manage this large-scale religious event, the government has appointed two senior IAS officers as nodal officers for the twin yatra routes. Dr. Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, has been assigned to oversee the Baltal route, while Rahul Yadav, Managing Director of the Jammu and Kashmir Energy Development Agency, will supervise the Pahalgam route. These officers will be responsible for coordinating with all stakeholder agencies involved in the yatra and will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB).

Alongside the nodal officers, 58 officers from the Jammu and Kashmir Administrative Service (JKAS) have been deployed across key locations along the yatra routes. These officers will serve in various capacities such as Camp Directors and Additional Directors, ensuring effective ground-level coordination, pilgrim support, and crisis response. The General Administration Department has relieved them from their existing duties for the duration of the yatra, and they will draw salaries from their designated locations until the yatra concludes, after which they will return to their original postings.

To fortify the security apparatus, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) conducted an extensive anti-sabotage and sanitisation operation at the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu on June 18. Using sniffer dogs, metal detectors, and surveillance equipment, CRPF teams swept the parking areas, approach roads, and surrounding buildings, including the banks of the River Tawi. The security wing of the Jammu and Kashmir Police has taken charge of internal camp security, while the CRPF is managing the perimeter to ensure complete safety for incoming pilgrims.

In a parallel effort to tighten security across border regions, the police have been directed to strengthen existing checkpoints and identify new locations for additional ones in the districts of Jammu, Samba, and Kathua. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Shiv Kumar Sharma issued these directives during a security audit of multiple locations, including the Ram Mandir Purani Mandi, Geeta Bhawan Parade, the base camp, and key yatra routes. Officers of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) stationed at Ram Mandir were also briefed to maintain heightened vigilance, particularly during night hours. SHOs in the region have been asked to intensify patrolling and bolster overall readiness.

Meanwhile, in the Valley, the General Officer Commanding of the Chinar Corps, Lieutenant General Prashant Shrivastava, reviewed the security and operational preparedness of troops deployed in both North and South Kashmir. During his review, he emphasized the need for continued vigilance, agility, and a mission-critical approach to readiness. Commending the dedication of the armed forces, he reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful and incident-free yatra season, despite the challenges posed by the terrain and potential threats.

Last year, more than 5.10 lakh devotees undertook the pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave shrine. This year, with an expected increase in the number of pilgrims, the administration is scaling up efforts across all fronts—including transportation, lodging, medical support, food distribution, and weather management. The twin routes—Nunwan-Pahalgam and Baltal—have already seen major preparatory work to make the tracks, shelters, and facilities fully functional and accessible.

With coordinated deployment of senior officials, robust security by CRPF and state police, and strategic oversight by the Indian Army, the Jammu and Kashmir administration is ensuring that Amarnath Yatra 2025 remains not only spiritually fulfilling but also safe and efficiently managed. The massive logistical and security mobilisation reflects the government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the sentiments and safety of lakhs of pilgrims arriving from across the country.
