Thick fog engulfs Srinagar, temp plunges in Jammu

Srinagar: Meteorological Department predicts light snow over plains and lower reaches while light to moderate snow over middle and higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir on December 9-10, even as Kashmir valley continued to shiver in unabated cold coupled with fog and haze on Sunday.
A fresh Western Disturbance is likely to affect J&K and adjoining areas from December 9 evening, the MeT office said and added under the influence of this system Possibility of Light snow over plains and lower reaches, light to moderate snow over middle & higher reaches till December 10 evening.
The WD is likely to affect particularly over North, Northwestern, central parts of Kashmir & South Kashmir and light rain at isolated to scattered places of Jammu Division. The weather will remain dry till December 8, MeT said.
Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded coldest night again on Sunday so far and it tied with the lowest of -2.2 degrees Celsius recorded on November 29. It was minus 1.3 degree Celsius below normal against minus 0.9 degree Celsius during this period of the season.
Major parts of Kashmir valley including Srinagar's fashionable Boulevard road, Dal Lake, Nishat, Shalimar, Foreshore road and other parts were engulfed with thick fog coupled with haze. The motor vehicles had to put on headlights in the morning while playing on the several roads.
Tourist hotspot of Pahalgam in south Kashmir remained the coldest place with the minimum temperature dipped to minus 4.6 degree Celsius on Sunday against the minus 2.8 degree Celsius recorded the previous night. The temperature was minus 1.3 degree Celsius below normal during this period of the season at the valley of shepherds.
The Ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded a low of minus 2.5 degree Celsius on Sunday against the minus 2.0 degree Celslius recorded a day ago which was 0.8 degree Celsius above normal during this period of the season for the valley of meadow.
Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu national had a low of minus 2.8 degree Celsius against minus 1.8 degree Celsius recorded the previous night while Kukernag in south Kashmir recorded a low of minus 0.8 degree Celsius against minus 1.0 degree Celsius recorded the previous night.
The frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara witnessed a low of minus 2.4 degree Celsius on Sunday against the minus 1.9 degree Celsius recorded the previous night which was minus 1.0 degree Celsius below normal during this period of the season, the MeT office said.
