Jammu- Srinagar National highway opened for traffic, Mughal road and Ladakh remain closed

Srinagar, Oct 25: Traffic on the Jammu- Srinagar National highway resumed on Monday after being closed for two days due to landslides, while Ladakh and Mughal road remain closed for the third consecutive day, following accumulation of snow, a traffic control room official said.
He said light motor vehicles were allowed to move on either side of the Srinagar-Jammu National highway from this morning onwards after clearing the road of the debris at various places.
The highway was closed for traffic movement on Saturday following landslides, shooting of stones and mud sliding which occurred at several places due to heavy rainfall. However, the prompt action by the authorities who put men and machines into service round the clock to help open the road for the traffic.
He said stranded vehicles on the highway at several places were the first to be allowed to move towards their destinations.
Meanwhile, snow clearance operation on Srinagar-Leh highway at Zojila pass and Gumri was stopped as inclement weather caused more snowfall on Sunday making it difficult for the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) to continue the clearing operation, traffic officials said.
He said as soon as the weather shows improvement, clearance of snow from the highway would resume again.
Mughal road connecting the Shopian district with Rajouri and Poonch also remained closed for the third consecutive day on Monday, he said and added, the operation of clearing the snow could not continue due to bad weather and fresh snowfall on the road.
Meanwhile, snow clearance operation was also taken up on war footing in several far flung areas which were closed due to the heavy snowfall on Saturday and many were put through for vehicular traffic, the official added.
