Mini-hydro power project, houses damaged in cloudbursts in Kargil

Kargil, Jul 28: A mini hydro power project and few residential houses were partially damaged due to a flash flood that was triggered by two cloudbursts in this border district of the Union Territory of Ladakh, officials sources said on Wednesday.

They said that the cloudburst took place at village Khangral, about 60 km from Kargil town, on Srinagar-Leh national highway, resulting in partial damage to few residential houses in the area following flash floods. “People rushed to the mountains to take refuge though they returned to their houses after the water level receded,” the sources said.

In another incident, a cloudburst occurred at Sangra, about 40 km from Kargil town, on Kargil-Zanskar road. “A mini hydro power project was partially damaged due to the flash flood, triggered by the cloudburst,” they said.

However, there was no report of any loss of life in both the area. “The administration has rushed men and machinery to restore damage cause by the flash floods due to the roads and other structures,” they added.
