IPS badge soon for 28 top cops; 27 from 1990 batch to get SP rank

‘Names of 62 JKPS officers recommended to UPSC for induction’

Jammu: As many as 28 senior officers set to get IPS badge and 27 from the batch of 1990, awaiting promotions since long, will shortly be promoted as Superintendent of Police.
According to official sources, decks are cleared for induction of 28 officers of Jammu and Kashmir Police into Indian Police Services (IPS) and the committee in this regard is scheduled to meet on July 29.
They further revealed that the Jammu and Kashmir Home Department has also nodded the much awaited promotion of Sub Inspectors from the 1990 batch, to the rank of Superintendents of Police (SP).
“Majority of the police personnel in this batch has already been elevated to the rank of Deputy Superintendents of Police but, waiting for promotions,” sources said adding that in the batch of 1990, as many as 253 cops were inducted as Sub Inspectors out of which many have attained superannuation and plenty will be retiring soon.
Presently J&K Police have 35 vacant posts of SPs and among them, 27 are to be filled up by the officers from the 1990 batch, sources revealed to ‘The News Now’.
“The much-awaited IPS induction is expected to be held by the end of this month probably on July 29 as the Central government has signaled green to the Selection Committee Meeting (SCM) comprising officials from MHA and the J&K UT administration besides from the Union Public Services Commission (UPSC) to finalize the process,” they said.
The SCM, as per the sources, will have the Chairperson of UPSC or a member nominated by him, Joint Secretary (Police) in the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Chief Secretary Dr Arun Kumar Mehta, Principal Secretary, Jammu and Kashmir Home Department Shaleen Kabra and Director General of Police, Dilbag Singh.
“During the meeting, a decision on induction of only 28 officers will be taken despite having 44 vacancies as on date,” they said.
Sources asserted that earlier, the JKUT had submitted the names of 62 officers to UPSC for selection including the majority from 99 JKPS batch and some those who have retired.
Filling up vacancies in the promotion quota of IPS in J&K came to standstill in 2010 due to several issues including the seniority disputes and litigations.
In May 2020, the proposal submitted to the UPSC by the Jammu and Kashmir Administration, has still been shelved.
