Govt sanctions Rs 5.87 crore to preserve Historic Science College

Jammu: More than a century old historic Government Gandhi Memorial Science College is all set to be preserved in the coming days for which the Jammu and Kashmir Government has also sanctioned Rs 5.87 crores.
Sources in the Higher Education Department said that preparations have been set into motion to preserve the heritage building of the famous GGM Science College which is more than one hundred years old.
“The Department of Higher Education has sanctioned Rs 5.87 crore for the preservation of the building,” sources said.
They added that out of the total funds sanctioned, Rs 2.28 crore will be spent on the preservation of the main block building, Rs 1.93 crore on the conservation of the geology block and Rs 1.65 crore on the conservation of the physics and chemistry blocks.
“While working on such an important project, taking care of its design matters a lot and it is mandatory for the preservation,” they added.
Sources said that it should also be ensured that no damage should happen to the building at the time of earthquakes while the photographs of buildings must be clicked before and after preservation.
“The construction work should be allotted through e-tendering,” they added.
The Science College was once known as the Prince of Wales and was established in the year 1905.
Prior to independence, the college was accredited with the Punjab University of Lahore.
“The entrance of the College was reconstructed two years back on the original format and about Rs 22 lakhs was spent on it,” they added.
There are some major departments in the College premises which are not less than a heritage comprising the Geology Department, which has years’ old rare items, historic library and other departments.
One of the College faculties when contacted, said, “funds are approved for the preservation of the heritage buildings and the work is to be done by JKPCC and INTEC.”
“Presently in view of COVID pandemic, the work may get delayed for some time but will begin soon,” he added.
