2 militants killed in Encounter in Valley

Srinagar: Two Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants, including a foreigner, were on Tuesday killed in an encounter which ensued after security forces launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in the apple township of Sopore in north Kashmir district of Baramulla.
A police official said that following specific information about presence of militants, a joint Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) was launched by Special Operations Group (SOG) of J&K police, 22 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and CRPF at Nathipora in Sopore on Tuesday.
However, they said when security forces were moving towards the target house, militants hiding there, fired at them with automatic weapons. “The security forces retaliated ensuing in an encounter,” they said, adding two militants were killed in the exchange of fire.
He said slain militants have been identified as Wasim Ahmed Lone, a resident of Hatlangoo Sopore, and a foreigner Hamas alias Asrar alias Saria, who was active since March 2018 in north Kashmir.
“As per police records, both the killed militants were part of groups involved in several militants activities, including planning and executing attacks on security establishments. “Hamas, along with another militant, identified as Mudasir Pandit alias Maaz, was mastermind of Sopore militant attack on March 29 in which two Municipal Councilors and a policeman were killed,” he said.
He said arms and ammunition, including one AK-47 rifle, one Insas rifle and other incriminating materials were recovered from the site of encounter,” he said.
He said the last rites of the killed militant shall be performed after conducting medico-legal formalities and the nearest family members of local ultra shall be allowed to participate in the last rites.
“In this connection police have registered a case under relevant sections of law and investigation has been initiated. People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared off of all the explosive materials, if any,” he added.
