3500 cases settled in National Lok Adalat held in J&K

Srinagar, Apr 18: About 3500 cases were settled amicably during National Lok Adalat held across Jammu and Kashmir, an official said here on Sunday.

“As the entire citizenry including the litigants are in deep mental stress due to ill surge in COVID-19 Pandemic, J&K Legal Services Authority under the stewardship of Chief Justice, High Court of J&K & Patron-in-Chief J&K & Ladakh Legal Services Authorities, Justice Pankaj Mithal, and under the guidance of Executive Chairman J&K Legal Services Authority, Justice Ali Mohammad Magrey and Executive Chairman, Ladakh Legal Services Authority, Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur, organized National Lok Adalat throughout J&K on Saturday,” he said.

He said this National Lok Adalat was organized in all the Districts of J&K to achieve the goal of Access to Justice for all and to help the poor litigants tide over their financial problems and untold mental stress.

“As per the information received from the districts, a total number of 5400 cases taken up by benches in the day long National Lok Adalat at various courts across the Union Territory,” he said.

Out of this, he said 3500 cases were disposed off and an amount of over Rs 21 crore was awarded as compensation/ settlement amount in civil, criminal, labour disputes, Electricity and Water Bills cases, Land Acquisition, Family matters, cheque dishonor and Bank Recovery cases.

Giving details about Kashmir division, he said a National Lok Adalat program was held on Saturday under the Chairmanship of Pr District & Sessions Judge Budgam, Mohammad Ashraf Malik at Court Complex Budgam, Chadoora, Chari sharief, Magam and Beerwah in which cases as per NALSA direction were fixed.

“During the program, Six Benches were constituted to take up the cases for amicable settlement,” he said.

He said a total number of 128 cases were taken up for amicable settlement out of which 58 cases were settled and an amount of Rs 20,700 was realized as settlement amount.

He said a special Lok Adalat was held at District Court Complex, Bandipora under the supervision of District & Sessions Judge, Bandipora Mohammad Ibrahim Wani.

“During the Lok Adalat, two benches were constituted. A total of 99 cases of different nature were taken up for settlement, of which, 75 cases were settled amicably,” he said, adding a settlement amount of Rs 26900 was awarded as compensation on the spot.

He said a National Lok Adalat was on Saturday organized under the Chairmanship of Pr District & Sessions Judge Srinagar, Mohammad Akram Choudhary at District Court Complex Moominabad Srinagar, in which cases as per NALSA directions were fixed. “A total of 1,162 cases were taken up for amicable settlement out of which 909 cases were settled,” he said.

He said Rs 58,05,000 was awarded as compensation by MACT Srinagar and Rs 56,100 was collected as settlement amount by different courts. “Fine of Rs 42,800 was also collected,” he added.

He said the District Legal Services Authority Ganderbal held National Lok Adalat in the district under the supervision of Chairman District Legal Services Authority (Principal District and Sessions Judge) Ganderbal, Shazia Tabassum. “On the occasion, two Benches were constituted at Ganderbal and Kangan who took up the identified matters for amicable settlement,” he said.



He further said total 99 cases were taken up before the National Lok Adalat Benches, out of which 11 cases were settled through amicable settlement and an amount of Rs 4,200 was realized as fine.

“A National Lok Adalat was held at District Court Complex Shopian under the Chairmanship of Chairman District Legal Services Authority Shopian. On the occasion, two Benches were constituted who took up the cases for amicable settlement,” he said.

He said total 48 cases were taken up in the Lok Adalat out of which 17 cases have been settled by Mediation and reconciliation. “An amount of Rs 10,100 has been recovered as fine and same has been deposited in Government Treasury,” he said.

He said a National Lok Adalat was held at District Court Complex Kulgam, under the chairmanship of Pr District & Sessions Judge Kulgam Tahir Khursheed Raina (Chairman District Legal Services Authority Kulgam). “Four benches were constituted, two at Head Quarter & one each at D H Pora and Qazigund,” he said.

He said 127 cases were taken up, out of which 84 cases were amicably settled and an amount of Rs. 32900 was realized as fine in different cases.

He said the National Lok Adalat was held at district Kupwara by the District Legal Services Authority Kupwara. “A total of 167 cases were taken up before seven benches constituted by Pr District and Sessions Judge/Chairman District Legal Services Authority Kupwara Tasleem Arif, across district Kupwara in the court complexes of Kupwara, Handwara, Sogam and Tangdhar,” he said.

He said 101 cases pending in various courts were disposed off by amicable settlements which even led to settlement of Rs 2, 53,639 as compensation and fine. “As many as 24 Pre-Litigation cases were settled including bank recovery and public utility services in the National Lok Adalat,” he said.
