Vigilant locals’ thwart heroin purchase, supplier escapes

Jammu: Despite the Jammu and Kashmir government's stringent measures, drug abuse cases continue to rise in the region.
Official data from the Central Government reveals that nearly 10 lakh people, around 8% of the total population of Jammu and Kashmir, are affected by drug abuse.
In a recent spate of incidents in the Jammu district on Tuesday, a 35-year-old man from Rajiv Nagar was hospitalized in GMC Jammu due to a drug overdose.
Identified as Meharbaan, he was found unconscious outside his house and is currently in critical condition.
Another case reported in the Miran Sahib area, where two youths, Amarjeet and Nitin, were apprehended by vigilant locals while attempting to buy heroin from a supplier named Murad Ali.
Official said that two youth Amarjeet and Nitin in their Wagon R car reached the house of Murad Ali in the Maralian area to buy heroin. The alert neighbours of Murad Ali apprehended the duo youth and beat the drug supplier.
By the time a police team from the concerned police station reached there, the heroin supplier rushed from the spot. Police, however, took both the drug users and the wife of Murad Ali with them for questioning.
In a separate incident, the Jammu and Kashmir Police booked a notorious drug peddler, Rohit Kumar alias Binny of Darsopur, Miran Sahib, under the Public Safety Act. Kumar, who had been evading arrest in multiple cases, was finally apprehended by a police team led by SDPO RS Pura Nikhil Gogna JKPS and SHO Police' station Miran Sahib Inspector Bopinder Singh.
Officials said that a warrant of arrest under PSA vide order No 31 of 2023 dated 20/11/2023 under section 8 (1) (A) of J&K Public Safety Act 1978 was issued against the accused by District Magistrate Jammu after receiving the dossier from district police against the accused .
“The said accused was habitual of indulging in criminal activities. There were various cases in which the accused was involved in different police stations of different districts of Jammu zone .Details of the cases include Case FIR No. 48/2016 U/S 8/15 NDPS Act, Police Station Satwari, Case FIR No 244/2017 U/S 8/21/22 NDPS Act, Police Station Gandhi Nagar, Case FIR No 10/2018 U/S 8/21/22 NDPS Act Police Station Miran Sahib, Case FIR No 148/2020 U/S 8/15 NDPS Act Police Station Satwari, Case FIR No 157/2023 U/S 457/380 IPC Police Station Miran Sahib.
He was later sent to the Central Jail KotBhalwal Jammu.
